Iron Age Karelian jewelry

Karelian Iron age ladies had heavy jewelry decorating their gowns. Pair of tortoise brooches closed a peplos dress. Hanging from brooches were chain hangers and tubular bronze beads with charms. Iron chain maille strip connects brooches. In the ends of longer iron chains are ear spoon and knife.

Bronze parts have been sand casted and slightly polished with clay paste. Sand casting is not suitable method for making complicate items like these, but several attemps produced few succesfull castings. Knife blade is steel and decorative metal parts are made of sterling silver. Handle is reindeer antler.

Blue cape is hand woven by frienf of mine. I dyed it blue with indigo and finished edges with tablet woven trims.
